Powązki Cemetery (Stare Powązki), founded in 1790, is one of Warsaw's oldest cemeteries and the resting place of many of Poland's best-known writers, artists, scientists and statesmen. The Church of St. Charles Borromeo stands at its gate on Powązkowska Street. It was rebuilt and enlarged into its present form at the end of the 19th century.
