Warsaw's modernist Main Station (Dworzec Główny) on Aleje Jerozolimskie was still unfinished when it was destroyed in 1939, and for three decades after the war the city made do with provisional station buildings. Warszawa Centralna, designed by Arseniusz Romanowicz and Piotr Szymaniak, opened in December 1975 above the underground cross-city railway line. Since 2022 its western neighbour has been Varso Tower, at 310 metres the tallest building in the European Union.
