The Warsaw–Vienna Railway Station, the city's first, opened in 1845 at the corner of Marszałkowska Street and Aleje Jerozolimskie; from 1919 it served as the Main Station. Most of the building was demolished between the wars for the cross-city railway line, the rest burned in September 1939, and the ruins of the clock tower were blown up in 1947. Today the corner is occupied by the sunken 'Patelnia' square at the entrance to Centrum metro station, with the Palace of Culture and Science behind it.
