The houses of the Old Town Market Square kept their early-17th-century form almost unchanged until 1944, when the Old Town was destroyed during and after the Warsaw Uprising. In 1949–1953 the townhouses were carefully reconstructed using surviving stonework and fragments of painted decoration, and the square was reopened on 22 July 1953. The rebuilt Old Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980.
