Krakowskie Przedmieście is the northern part of the Royal Route, here with St Anne's Church and the former Bernardine monastery; before the war trams ran along the street. Its buildings were damaged during the defence of Warsaw in September 1939 and again in 1944. After the war most of its historic buildings were rebuilt, some restored to their earlier 18th-century appearance.
