Hotel Europejski on Krakowskie Przedmieście was built in stages in 1855–1877 to a design by Henryk Marconi; in 1877 it installed the first passenger lift in Warsaw. A fire broke out in the building during the defence of Warsaw in September 1939; after the war the Ministry of Defence completed its rebuilding for a military academy, and it was converted back into a hotel in 1957–1961. During a 2013–2018 renovation two new storeys replaced the attic, and in May 2018 it reopened as Raffles Europejski Warsaw.
