Theatre Square is framed by the Grand Theatre and the Jabłonowski Palace, which served as Warsaw's City Hall from 1819 to 1944. The theatre was bombed in September 1939 and wrecked in 1944; it was rebuilt and enlarged in 1947–1965, keeping its original façade on the square. The burned-out ruins of the Jabłonowski Palace were demolished in 1952 and the palace was reconstructed in 1995–1997.
