The Main Building was erected in 1899–1901 to a design by Stefan Szyller for the Emperor Nicholas II Polytechnic Institute, and from 1915 housed the Polish Warsaw University of Technology. It was burnt out during the war and repaired after 1945; in December 1948 a mass rally for the congress uniting the PPR and PPS parties was held on the square in front of it. Under communist rule the square was renamed Plac Jedności Robotniczej. Today the restored building, with its large glass-roofed main hall, is again the university's centrepiece on Plac Politechniki.
